UTA Pollutes. Now, More than Ever with FrontRunner
Give a cheer for those earnest, high polluting, folks over at UTA.
They claim to reduce dangerous pollution.
But, FrontRunner actually makes ozone and fine particulate worse.
UTA lied through their teeth in their environmental impact statements for both FrontRunner extensions by refusing to reveal the huge jumps in NOx they cause.
That is a NEPA requirement. NEPA is National Environmental Policy Act.
After full system developed, FrontRunner trains will likely burn over 4 million gallons of diesel a year.
They will dump an added 400 to 500 tons of NOx into our air each year, (beyond reductions from car/truck emissions and bus “economies”).
The big jump in FrontRunner pollution will wipe out many times over whatever small reductions in NOx that might come from new light rail lines.
A similar analysis for UTA Bus-caused NOx was uncovered by the recent legislative audit of UTA. They said that the small reductions in NOx from TRAX and Vanpools was wiped out by a large excess of NOx from buses. (Audit page 85)
"UTA is a net polluter of NOx,” the report said. 185 tons of net NOx emissions increase.
Now, thanks to FrontRunner, UTA is an even bigger net polluter of NOx than before, hundreds of tons worse.
There were two Alternatives to diesel-guzzling FrontRunner:
DMU cars. These have small diesel engines in each car and can be linked up into trains. This alternative was rejected while UTA was blinded by its own counting mistakes about the “fantastic” TRAX success. They went for really big capacity.
NOx pollution and diesel consumption 75% less than with locomotive-pulled trains. Over 50% cost savings.
Electric locomotives with electric catenaries (wires) above the tracks, like TRAX.
This was how our fine electric interurban trains on the same route were powered nearly a century ago: Bamberger and
Costs a lot more in the short run, but saves in long run.
Saves burning over 200 million gallons of diesel fuel next 50 years.
Save diesel cost that will greatly exceed $1 billion!
Saves thousands of tons of NOx and pollution.
Saves tens of million$ for expensive diesel locomotive rebuilds and pollution control equipment
UTA got itself into this mess with its eyes wide shut!

UTA has Less then Half as EFFICIENT
TRANSIT SYSTEM.
Hey, how about a link to this report? I don't know what audit you are referring to. I'd love to read it. I suspect you are full of shit judging from the rest of your site but I'd love to know more. How about a link to the report you cite. Tammi Diaz, as for you, stop with that nonsense. I can tell by your puncutation and grammer that you will never earn more than 8 dollars an hour. John Inglish earns his salary and UTA pays that to keep a qualified person running the organization. "UTA has less then half as efficient transit system" as what? You are an idiot.
Hey Remy,
FYI Tammi Diaz is a community activist and has worked with the Transit Riders Union since 2007. She was in a pedestrian/car accident that caused a traumatic brain injury, which does have an affect on her writing skills, so maybe you could let go of the hateful criticism and accept the content of the message she is sending.
The report she is referring to is the Legislative Audit report from the Office of the Legislative Auditor General State of Utah.
Here's your site: [PDF]
Digest of A Performance Audit of the Utah Transit Authority.
You say John Inglish earns his money, how? in our opinion it is through unreliable passenger data (pp 7)LA. High subsidies, NO Board Independence or Oversight and unaccountability.
So why don't you go read the Audit for yourself and maybe YOU will understand what Tammi is saying, and please stop casting labels on others that are working to improve a bus system for all of us.
Just because someone has a disability doesn't mean I can't criticize them. People with disabilities are just as capable as anyone at defending their positions. There is nothing hateful about my position.
The sentiments expressed by both Tammi Diaz and Michael Packard are juvenile and show extremely little insight into how Utah Transit Authority management and the transportation technologies utilized by UTA actually work. I see nothing in the way of suggested solutions to your grievances or appreciation for the many positive accomplishments of UTA. Your entire site seems extremely one-sided. That is fine, that is why I am posting, and I appreciate that you let me post on the site.
P.S. Thank you for the reference to the report. I will read the report and respond in the future. I will be dazzled if it changes my opinion of your original post.
UTA has good Bus Service down town Salt Lake City, in the Avenues and at the University of Utah with they granted students and faculty discounts beyond what other fare pass holders pay in the amount $6.3 million each year.
We need to start Asking: What is UTA doing to Encourage Motorist to take the Bus, and leave their Vehicles at Home and Help out our Environment?
UTA needs to get Accessible Vans and Small Buses to go into Neighborhoods to take Individuals
to the Main Bus Routes.
We also need to Ask: Is our Transit
System, Convenient, Frequent and Affordable for all Citizens?
Gas Prices have Sky Rocketed. UTA should not be Gouging Riders with Fare Increases.
UTA is trying to get other ENTITIES
to provide more Transportation to the Disabled and to the Elderly. These other ENTITIES receive limited fund for Transportation. Service for the Disabled and the Elderly most be cut.
Through Mismanagement, and Aggressive Elimination of Bus Routes and Fare Increases UTA is Destroying the Bus System.
These ENTITIES would be responsible for Drivers, Gas, Maintenance and the purchase of more Vehicles in order to meet all the needs. How would these other ENTITIES dispatch
Vehicles and who will pay for all of this?
The needs will keep growing because
of baby boomers and the war. More and more solders are coming home Disabled, and they will not be able to drive.
UTA Executives receive Huge Bonuses
for Increase Ridership, after they receive there Huge Bonuses, they will say Ridership is down cut Bus Routes, of course UTA Executive keep the Bonuses.
UTA is a PUBLIC SERVICE! They receive PUBLIC FUNDS!
What is TAXPAYER PAYING FOR!
For remy louviere I will not stop, UTA has hurt me and alot of other Individuals by Destroying the Bus System and Fare Increases.
John Inglish General Manager of the Utah Transit Authority is unelected Public Official and the rest Executives are also unelected Public Officials.
John Inglish needs to move on, Salaries need to be Cut and the Elimination of the Bonuses.
TAXPAYER CAN'T keep PAYING HUGE SALARIES and the HUGE BONUSES, UTA forgotten that they are in Public Transit Business, to Help People to
get people from point A to Point B.
There are Individuals that walk blocks to a Bus Stop and Individuals that disabled or Elderly that almost Home Bound. The Fare Increase for Paratransit is so High I have friends that can't afford it so do not go as many places. These are Individuals on a very fixed income.
UTA does not follow their MISSION STATEMENT!
